Puccini Festival at Torre del Lago
Puccini Festival: Opera under the stars at Torre del Lago
There is a place in Tuscany where the music of Giacomo Puccini resonates exactly where it was conceived.
The Giacomo Puccini Open-Air Grand Theatre, overlooking Lake Massaciuccoli, hosts the Puccini Festival every year, the only festival in the world entirely dedicated to the great composer from Lucca.
The Festival takes place in summer from July to September, with all performances starting at 9:15 pm.
A stage with a soul
Puccini arrived at Torre del Lago in June 1891, and here he found his creative refuge.
It was in this tranquillity, among the lake’s reeds and the sunsets of Versilia, that he composed many of his masterpieces. Right here at Torre del Lago, immortal works were born: Manon Lescaut, La Bohème, Tosca, Madama Butterfly, La Fanciulla del West, La Rondine and Il Trittico.
Attending these operas in the very place where they were created offers an emotion that no other theatre in the world can match.
The experience: opera under the stars
The theatre has a capacity of 3,400 seats and offers a unique experience: the stage opens onto the lake, and when the sun sets, the magic unfolds. The singers’ voices blend with the evening breeze, the sunset light gives way to the stars, and Puccini’s most celebrated arias seem to come home.
The first Puccini performance on the lake dates back to 1930, with La Bohème staged in a temporary theatre built on stilts. Since then, the festival has become an unmissable event for opera lovers from around the world.
Puccini Festival parking
The nearest car park to the theatre is located in Via delle Torbiere, which has a much more limited capacity compared to the theatre. Alternative parking options include the surrounding streets along the road leading to the theatre.
For this reason, it is important to leave well in advance to find a spot, especially on busier evenings.
Our shuttle service or private chauffeur hire
On performance evenings, we offer a shuttle service departing from Lucca, or alternatively a private chauffeur service.
You can enjoy your evening without the stress of searching for parking, no walking in the dark after the show, and the freedom to fully immerse yourself in the performance.
